I was excited to visit the beaver pond after a few weeks of being away. It was hot and dry on this August morning so the water was seriously low. No beavers in sight, but a pretty scene all the same with white and pink water lilies dotting the big lily pads. They seemed to glow in the morning light.
I love this time of year because wildlife returns and is visible all around Cape Ann, MA.
Today, many of us watched along the shoreline as several whales spouted in the distance. They seemed to be having fun, blowing up small clouds and twisting at the water’s surface. They were right by Kettle Island, a spring-time heron rookery off Magnolia Beach in Gloucester. Egrets can be seen flying overhead, and gather at my local pond in numbers. They are quite beautiful and their white feathers surreal against the muddy browns of the pond. But nothing beats a surprise, a special visit.
Yesterday I set out with about twenty other folks for a birding walk at Halibut Point State Park in Rockport, MA. Halibut Point is a hearty 67-acre adventure of trees and thickets, rocks and paths, birds and other wildlife, and the open ocean surrounding a beautiful 60-foot quarry.
It’s fun to drive north in Florida on that strip from Cocoa Beach, between the Atlantic and Banana River, up to Cape Canaveral. The surfing vibe blends with space travel, and there’s magic in the air. As usual, I am thinking of birds and getting my fill of hawks, vultures, and egrets along the way. My niece Sara was driving, and little did I know had a surprise in store for me having discovered a special place she knew I would love.
Have you ever seen a Great Egret, Ardea alba? They are big and completely bright white heron with a wingspan of 4–5 ft., so they are easily spotted through the bare trees. Wednesday morning I gasped as I saw a large group intermittently dotting the pond through the brush as I drove past. Still seems too early for them to be back on Cape Ann, I thought and quickly circled back, heart pounding with excitement. I had my camera on the seat next to me.
